From History Buff to UX Writer: Connecting the Dots in My Unexpected UX Writing Journey

Have you ever looked at your career path and thought, “This isn’t exactly what I expected?” Because that’s exactly where I found myself. As a recent graduate of the UX Writing Academy, I’m swapping travel itineraries for user journeys, and let me tell you, it’s been a fascinating adventure!

Many might raise an eyebrow at my background. After all, I started with a degree in Art History, fueled by a lifelong passion for the stories whispered by ancient artifacts. Then, I took a detour into the world of customer service, where I polished my communication skills while navigating the intricacies of international relations (thanks to being bilingual in German and Spanish!). Finally, I added a Master’s degree in Teaching to the mix, officially becoming a history, art history, and geography teacher.

So, how did this eclectic mix of experiences lead me to the world of UX writing? The answer lies in the surprising connections that bind them all.

From Teacher to Guide: The Power of User Empathy

As a teacher, my primary focus was on guiding students through complex information. I learned to tailor explanations, anticipate questions, and ensure clear understanding. These are all essential skills for a UX writer! Understanding user needs and crafting language that guides them seamlessly through a digital experience feels remarkably similar to leading a student through a historical period.

Customer Service: The Art of Understanding Needs

My customer service experience was an invaluable crash course in user empathy. I learned to listen intently, identify pain points, and communicate solutions effectively. This skill directly translates to UX writing, where understanding user frustrations and crafting clear, helpful copy is paramount.

Art History: Unveiling the User Journey

Perhaps the most unexpected connection lies in my art history background. At its core, UX writing is about storytelling. Just as art historians analyze the narrative behind a painting, UX writers must understand the user journey and craft a story that unfolds with each interaction. But the connection goes even deeper. Great art movements, from Renaissance masters to modern installations, have always pushed the boundaries of communication and user experience. In a similar way, UX writing is an art form of the digital age, shaping the way users interact with technology and leaving a lasting impression.

Finding My Niche: A Passion for Clear Communication

With a background as diverse as mine, it’s difficult to pinpoint a single niche. However, a common thread runs through all my experiences: a passion for clear communication. Whether it’s guiding students through historical periods, crafting travel itineraries, or resolving customer concerns, the ability to explain complex issues in an understandable way is key.

This passion for clear communication is precisely what drew me to UX writing. Here, I can apply my diverse skillset to craft user experiences that are informative, engaging, and ultimately, empowering.

This journey has been a testament to the power of transferable skills. While my background may seem unconventional, it has equipped me with a unique set of tools for success in UX writing. It’s all about finding the connections, the hidden threads that weave together to create a compelling narrative.
